good evening Richland colleagues
may we ask you to take your seat thank you well come to faculty and student
services complication twenty eighteen I am doctor Kay Eggleston your
Richland college presidents I it is my distinct honor this
evening to welcome you and ask each of you to join with me in
making a special new year's resolution to rise up Richland for student
success and that is our theme tonight at
our annual college complication in August of twenty seventeen we
were inspired to action by a Richland college vocal students
stirring performance of a hundred days rise up ballot emboldened each of us to move
mountains in inspiring all of our students to which she and
the communities and businesses that we serve to prosper and
flourish we collectively affirmed the vital work that we
do to remove barriers and to provide opportunities toward the
realization of success in these rounds as the song's lyrics implore us it is our time to rise up
Richland rise like the day rise unafraid rise high like the
waves we are going to move mountains will rise up and do it
at thousand times again for you our students so this spring semester what each phone the success of
every student in our classrooms let's move past the barriers
that may tend to hold some of them and us back let us pledge to walk the talk
of being an equity minded college providing support and
what ever level of hell each student may need in order to
achieve success while always preserving academic
rigor tonight let's replace ourselves
to our mission of teaching learning and community building and always within the context of
our vision to be the best place we can be to teach learn and
build sustainable local and world community it is in this spirit that I
welcome each of you this evening so please stand if this is your
first convocation so that we may extend a warm thundered up
welcome to you please stand if this is your first complication yeah thank you and welcome tonight we passed the leadership
baton from our interim executive vice president for academic
affairs in student success doctor rate canam to our new
executive vice president doctor Shannon Cunningham please join
me in expressing our sheer gratitude for doctor ray tandems
exceptional leadership and service these plans these past
seven months during which we conducted a national search and
hiring process to fill this keys senior leadership position
doctor cannibalism honor you please stand during his interim doctor cannot
has been actively involved with the DC CD network guided
pathways to success initiative he will present this evening to
you a brief update on the progress of this important work
following his remarks doctor cannot will introduce to you our
new executive vice president for academic affairs in student
success doctor Shannon Cunningham who will share
introductory comments with you as our chief academic affairs in
student success officer for Richland college before I turn the podium over to
these two valued colleagues I invite all of you to join me on
Thursday February eighth three thirty to four thirty PM right
here in famine performance hall to hear DC CD's chancellor Dr
John may provide a system network update to all of us he
will share details on our progress as a network in
community transformation through such breakthroughs as the Dallas
County promise and level of scholarship program expansion of
the early college high schools guided pathways to success
initiative and closing the skills gap for living wage jobs
doctor may will also take questions following his remarks
I hope you will be here with me in welcoming doctor may of the
first week of February February eighth now I extend to each of you my
sincerest best wishes for the new year ahead and please join
me in welcoming doctor ray cannon to the podium thank you well as seven doctor goes inside the I'm I was
the I'm the former interim executive vice president of
academic affairs and student success and and now I'm just an
executive team give me a second and the little the Clinton over
this I have to give up my windowless
office in Alameda hole and head back to Sabine to brighten
lights I no longer get a hundred and
fifty miles a day it's you know I'm a feel abandoned and and the
meetings I don't go to meetings downtown anymore it's a missing
them so much so hot I'll get over it I think I'm over so I saw a lot of you a new
faculty that this semester some of you up full time new full
time and part time faculty and I know that %HESITATION
%HESITATION you therefore know about
Richmond center values right the onus undervalues the new people
yeah yeah %HESITATION sometimes I
interview a lot of new faculty %HESITATION part time full time I always ask them what their
favorite funded by the U. is and %HESITATION sometimes I make
something up because I've read them by %HESITATION most of them choose the first
one on the list for choice makes me this suspicious integrity
they say well it is good you know I think
we couldn't get along as an educational higher higher
education institution without integrity %HESITATION and
%HESITATION that's quite a good thing but this one's my favorite joint action so I want to
encourage you to %HESITATION have a semester full of joy both
for yourselves and few students and do things that will
%HESITATION make things joyful for yourself and your students
%HESITATION one I think students really like is
to get their exams graded quickly and another is to get
their emails responded to quickly so if you do those two
things %HESITATION you'll make a your students very happy and
you'll be happier as result do things up making love sometimes do things
that a joyful and %HESITATION in general Mike Figgis think like a
student what would you like as a student too for for your
instructions to be like that so %HESITATION Trigo's nas me to
speak to a little bit about guided pathways today and
%HESITATION so drop the long version or the
short version long version anyone okay we'll go over the short
version and okay %HESITATION so we're going to start a little
further back than I wasn't good there we go gonna sell a little
further not we're not doing very well here only %HESITATION yeah lasted a little further
back when got a population that is talk about sixty by thirty
Texas this is an initiative by the Texas higher education
coordinating board started in twenty fifteen %HESITATION sixty by thirty
Texas now I know some of you are going
to say eighteen hundred Texas that's
not right that's not what it's about %HESITATION anyone who said a
hundred ninety Texas by the way you don't have to take a
remedial math course so what is sixty six two by
thirty Texas that's not going to looking room
here let's say five and %HESITATION someone's gonna have
to for that for me I'm afraid since it's not doing not damage posted
there we go so sixty by thirty Texas is a programmer who has an
objective that at least sixty percent of Texans age twenty
five to thirty four will have a certificate or degree by twenty
ten sorry about twenty thirty I've been here so long I can't
remember any I can read what year it is so twenty thirty sixty percent of
Texans will have a certificate or degree but twenty thirty %HESITATION so you know that
seems like a pretty good objective so %HESITATION coming
go to the next slide I hesitate to press this button
then we got there actually some other %HESITATION goes
associated with it not going to go through them but %HESITATION
for example at the actual number of students who are designed to
get that is to get a degree this is a degree of certificate or
degree including the high level degrees of to have a marketable
skills when they want employment and to not go into overwhelming
that when they finish their
%HESITATION %HESITATION program at the next slide please so how we doing held as a Texas
too in relationship to other places %HESITATION in terms of %HESITATION the proportion of
that twenty five to thirty four year olds having %HESITATION an
associate a high degree Ohio where South Korea is so high on that
list of posts or other Asian countries that we've got that
too Canada fifty seven percent Canaday I mean lumberjacks sometime in late
fifty seven percent in the UK is not doing too bad
Australia forty five percent yeah sheepherders on extra
strange they've got lots more degrees
than than the Americans have US forty two percent a Texas down there thirty five
percent so compared to lots of other
places including lots of other states in the US Texas is not doing that well in
terms of having %HESITATION uneducated population of twenty
five to thirty four year olds and %HESITATION so what do we
need a an educated population of twenty five to thirty four year
olds because there are lots of jobs that need education and the
training that needs to to the kids that need associate or
bachelor's or higher degrees and there were lots of jobs going
unfilled in Texas and lots of %HESITATION a need for a
qualified workforce the next slide please so what things look like Kurt
Richmond presently this is these are figures from Richmond %HESITATION how long does it
take us students to graduate well after three years of only
seventeen point one percent of graduated the average time for for five
years %HESITATION how many hours do
they take so you know how many hours there are and this is for
an associate degree by the way you know how many %HESITATION
graduate how many credit hours are required for an associate's
degree sixty the average average number taken
by Richmond graduates in twenty seventeen ninety one so they're putting in fifty percent more then they need to to get a
degree if they went straight for the degree
without a lot of extraneous courses and that %HESITATION eighteen
thousand five hundred fifty two is the
average debt of our students %HESITATION at the end of the
associate degree program because many have no debt and so that's
an average could have the next slide please so what we doing about it well there is a movement that's
national and it's cool the guarded
pathways approach or the guided pathways for success and many universities and
colleges are undertaking %HESITATION this putting their
students on these pathways in order to move them towards that
agrees more quickly and we the district the Dallas
County clinical this district is doing just that along with many
other colleges in Texas and others around the country at the
next place so what what what will happen if
we undertake guided pathways well the idea is that students
who choose a crip us early on using planning services so selected agrees that will
also to look at that will move them towards their intended goal they'll navigate through the
program that chosen using a guided pathways map and they will explore the labor
market to get some proper information about future
employment and to do this they gonna need a lot of %HESITATION assistance they're
gonna receive a piece of paper which I'll show you in a second
that will help them on their way they're also gonna need
assistance from people namely student advises guided pathways
student advisors who %HESITATION who's number we are increasing
at Richmond unnatural the number who been added this semester
five or six comes to my mind that will increase the ability
of our students to see advises more frequently next slide please so what will it do well that's what it will do
it'll it'll speech stands alone career pots that they've chosen and hopefully will increase
%HESITATION the %HESITATION assistance retention of students
increase the number who completes the kitchen degrees
%HESITATION increase outright numbers to transfer and lead to
more quickly to implement in the field they've chosen next place so what a career possibly
mention Korea puffs so the district has divided %HESITATION
all possible careers that they could think of locally that that
makes sense to can be placed in one of the
seven categories %HESITATION issue of their own she business education health
industries suffer sciences and stem and so these are sort of
overarching %HESITATION career paths and not individual routes
to a job at that groups of %HESITATION groups of of fields
of study that will when students that take the appropriate
courses and get a degree in the appropriate error would lead
them whether one of late the next place so you can read this very well
but this is a summary of the kinds of degree %HESITATION and
certificates students will take in each of the various up puffs
they have chosen for example stem science technology
engineering and math you you would I am tools a major
in biology or chemistry or knows of the sciences and related
areas on that on that segment of the job health sciences you're aiming
towards %HESITATION getting a degree and a certificate or
degree in dental hygiene or in %HESITATION %HESITATION %HESITATION pharmacy
technician of %HESITATION degree or a
radiology degree then you would %HESITATION be categorized in
that area and see advisors who specialized to advise you in
those subject areas likewise for the other five
segments on that chart and next come read this one a them but
you don't need to but this is the sort of a plan
that a student will be presented with this one represents biology
and so the student who says so you know I'm really wants to get
involved agree and perhaps go on to advance what could be on that
so the adviser and stammered saying %HESITATION here take
this and they'll go through this with them and it leads them to a
social degree %HESITATION that will transfer
very readily and get them ready for the junior senior level
classes at a four year university and is there a not in
need of other clothes classes listed that they are as
suggested that they take %HESITATION but on which on
route will get them in a socially degraded on the right
their own %HESITATION notations about what to do while you're in
that semester see an adviser go to crap planning etcetera
etcetera so far about forty eight of these %HESITATION career
paths have been created but there are more to do we have
the next slide please %HESITATION so but put this into effect
beginning this year %HESITATION and what we look for
down the road is %HESITATION these measures that will
indicate whether or not the plan has succeeded more completions
that our attention more degrees and certificates more transfers and a high of
%HESITATION measure of %HESITATION Climent from of the
graduates who leave this next place so what's going to happen is
this spring %HESITATION well students so %HESITATION be
made aware of the program the got a possible ways to success
program a blast student awareness campaign in January in April the website will be
part will launch %HESITATION and work around the
district will continue on creating the maps for the three
hundred degree and a so a degree and certificate programs that
this district has %HESITATION I mentioned that there were forty
eight so far created %HESITATION there are %HESITATION two hundred fifty some still
left to do and that's going to continue its
involving faculty it's involving administrators from around the
district to work %HESITATION it's been going on for over a
year in fact sent to create the forty eight or exist %HESITATION
this will %HESITATION %HESITATION then continue until the task is
completed and %HESITATION at the end of the other three hundred
of these %HESITATION Korea a puff GPS maps and they'll be workshops
informational modules that %HESITATION would be made
available %HESITATION to you and to
students and two advisors next please that's it
%HESITATION so that's gonna pathways and %HESITATION you'll be
hearing more about it obviously as the semester goes on this was
I know that many of you have already %HESITATION encountered
guided pathways this was for the benefit of those who have not
been attending various presentations and particularly
for the I. jokes who %HESITATION new to Richmond who haven't
heard of it before the fact a judge in general probably may
not have heard of it before %HESITATION forty one more thing
that is so promotes the %HESITATION adjunct faculty
association Rafah %HESITATION encourage you to use her and her
new members of this group to %HESITATION to %HESITATION sign up for
membership in Rafah you can do that in the adjunct faculty
office on the anti tubs direction and %HESITATION the
%HESITATION the leaders of the organization would be happy to
meet with you and discuss with you its objectives %HESITATION but also like to
thank Andy tops for the arrangements he may for the mail
today I think that was very nice and the correct so I just have one more thing to
do this when I read something rather than when it set and that is to introduce the
vice president so our new for us I knew exactly
vice president of academic affairs instant success is Shannon Cunningham many of
you wrote a matter because she interviewed for the number of
the full time faculty and stuff during the semester and she's
met more of you out candidate forums that were held during the
full but for those of you who knew part time faculty or part
time faculty as a whole may not yet have met Shannon and this is
your opportunity to meet her and hear her something about her background
which most recently shot and served as the vice president at
the still water campus of northern Oklahoma college part of what they're involved
recruiting in preparing students for moving on to Oklahoma state
university through a partnership called the gateway program
partnership between the community college and the
university %HESITATION in which US students
on credit at the college while having access to the services
and facilities at the university before they transferred prior to that Shannon served as
the assistant vice president for academic affairs at northeastern
Oklahoma and am college as chair of the agriculture department at
college and before that as a faculty member in that
department she has earned an associate of
science degree in agriculture from northeast in Oklahoma and
in college bachelor of science degree in
animal science from Oklahoma state university I must've education degree in
human resource somewhat forced development education from the
university of Arkansas and a PhD in agricultural education and
leadership from Oklahoma state university %HESITATION I'm delighted to say
that I've been asked to mental Shannon during her introduction
to Richmond college %HESITATION and to the DCCC day
and %HESITATION for concluded it'll probably take about a week
and a half before she is really up to full speed and %HESITATION
really of that knows it all so but I'll be available longer
than that as she needs me so %HESITATION please welcome
executive vice president Shannon Cunningham first I would like to personally
thank doctor king in them and who agreed to be my mentor for
the next two years I I spent the last week have
with ray and I'm looking forward to working together with you as
my mentor for the next two years and I would also like to say I
think he take any tabs for his hard work this is a really fun
evening and to all of you I would like to say welcome back happy new year and get evening
I'm very excited to service your executive vice president for
academic affairs and student success and I'm thrilled to have
the opportunity to meet and speak with you about a wrestling
team and our progress forward into the spring semester so many web metaphor I had the
great opportunity to do some walking around this evening and
get to meet more of you but for those of you who I haven't had
the opportunity to me yet I wanted to take this evening to
tell you a little more about myself I was born and raised in a small
town in rural West Virginia and was one of four children and my
father was a high school principal so loving family and
learning are deep in my roots that love of learning and let me
to pursue a degree in agriculture in equine science
and I knew I wanted to do that in Oklahoma to which my parents
said we totally support you we support your goals and we
support your move out last but you're gonna have to pay for it
yourself and I'm forever grateful that my parents take
that stance because I knew I couldn't afford the out of state
tuition and at four year institutions so I found a real
community college in northeast Oklahoma where I started my
academic journey I'll graduate that the community
college system and that's where I began my journey in higher
education I went on to earn degrees as ray said from
Oklahoma state university in the university of Arkansas so did
that I would say go pokes and we'll take ceiling I'm also incredibly proud to say
that I started my career as a faculty member returning to the
community college from which I graduated I spent twelve years
at northeastern Oklahoma a and M. college working as a faculty
member department here in an assistant vice president for
academic affairs and then accepted a position as vice
president for northern Oklahoma college is still water campus
where it's not taking into mentioned I worked very closely
with the Oklahoma state university serving a population
of students who weren't quite ready to enter the four year
setting or students who were in the area you chose exceeds he'd
agree I'm passionate about student
success in helping others achieve the promise of their
potential I need many years ago I wanted to remain in the
community college sector and not go into the for your world and
committed to the community college mission that we serve
all students and we helped to provide a means to a better life
for our students we serve a very special student population and
we started very special need in our community my personal mission statements
ad is helping others achieve success by their own definition
of success I think that really embodies
what we do here for some of our students success
means completing one course for some of our students success
looks like completing a degree and going directly into the
workforce and for some of our students success looks like
completing an associate's degree in transferring onto a four year
institution so we serve a very diverse student population in
each of us comes to us with unique needs and unique
definitions of success which one are admired our
commitment to that diversity tied to my personal mission
statement is my commitment to promoting my colleagues
definition of success I find great joy in helping others and
growing others and providing opportunities I firmly believe
that none of us are where we are in our careers or our lives it
worked for someone somewhere who gave us an opportunity to
succeed I'm very fortunate to have had many people in my life
who had given me many opportunities to be successful
so I wholeheartedly believe in providing those opportunities
for others as your vice president I want to provide
opportunities for faculty gross engagements and development initially I was asked to speak
tonight about my expectations and how we continue to TV
success here rex Latin since I've only been on the job for a
little over a week I thought it might be a little presumptuous
if I jumped into a list of expectations in visiting with
some of you in your areas and schools I've learned a lot in
just the last few days but I know that there's much more to
become acquainted with and to learn about Richland I truly
enjoyed getting to visit with you whether that be last week
this week or tonight at the dinner and hope to get to spend
sometime over the next few weeks visiting with everyone I'm open
to hearing your concerns and ideas and I welcome invitations
that allow me to get to know you better and to hear your needs
and ideas that promote the excellent work that you do with
our students I want to learn alongside you in from you I can
tell you however one of my expectations that will always
remain true and is one of my passions is that we always
operate from the perspective of doing what is best for our
students and empowering you to help them achieve their success hi to our strategic planning
priorities empowering our faculty and staff and empowering
our students to succeed will always be at the forefront I
think that when we operate from this perspective it makes making
decisions easier and innovation easier as well I know that in the fall
collectively we will all help to shape the expectations that we
will have for each of us but this evening I can tell you what
you can expect from me I believe in our mission of
teaching learning and community building I believe in supporting
faculty development as we create an exceptional learning
experience for our students I went to a dance opportunities
for faculty to collectively integrate learning developments
and learning power I went for my tools that help you work with a
diverse student population across campus I welcome the
opportunities for learning and professional growth and I want
to continue to communicate consistently and listen to
effectively and would ask the same of you I support new
programs that in the insect community and the ability to
place students in careers that provide them a living wage we do
impactful work we truly change lives and we all play a role in
that process I know many of you here tonight
have other jobs or may work in other outlets in addition to
your teaching and I just wanna take a chance to say that we all
play a role in what we do and we simply couldn't will operate
without the dedicated work ever adjunct faculty I think you for
your commitment to our students which some college truly is the
best place to learn teach and also stable local and world
community as a team we will celebrate
successful initiatives and achievements will ensure
institutional effectiveness through our work and support
each other we will challenge each other to innovate and think
outside of the box that it stretched the boundaries of what
we know as the typical or traditional model of higher
education we will become champions of guided pathways
early college high schools Dallas promise and other
initiatives focused on accelerating and promoting
student success in access through this process we will
need our communities educational needs provide students a path to
a lifelong career and serve all student populations who come to
us again what we do is important
work and through this work each of us contributes to the whole
organization the academic enterprise that is rich in
college while we work together to bring about better lives for
our students and provide a collaborative innovative and
engaging working environment for each other I look forward to
working with each of you as our faculty and student success
champions you're the conduit of learning and student success you
truly the heart of our institution I think each of you
for your hard work in all you do to contribute and they're
excited to be in the spring semester with you and I'm
looking forward to spending some time getting to know each of you
in hearing about the great things that we will continue to
accomplish as we rise up Richland thank you and have a great
spring semester yeah has asked me to announce
that now that we completed the portion of tonight's program
it's time to move to your respective disciplines break out
sessions if you're not sure of the location of your discipline
session the staff of the access center will be in the lobby to
